Testing the Intex Explorer 2 inflatable Kayak

We’ve always liked the idea of an inflatable Kayak but have been apprehensive to buy one because takes too long to set up, fear of it getting punctured, and lastly we didn’t think it would feel stable in the water. But we knew we would like one because of the ability to store it in a small place.

However, we were recently given the opportunity to test one out and here are our findings. The model we tested was the Intex Explorer 2 inflatable. It came in a nifty bag weighing in at less than 40 pounds. It retails for $189.00, (Amazon.com) and advertised for lakes and mild rivers. However we found out about the lakes and mild rivers part after taking it for a spin in the ocean, and it still did not too bad. Just don’t get it sideways of oncoming waves, ask us how we know. Now, back to the review.

We took the kayak out of the bag and set it up within 15 minutes. All the places where you fill it with air are numbered in sequence and that made setting it up a breeze. Shortly afterward we found ourselves sea worthy and felt safe and secure as the kayak sits low in the water. We found the seating positions comfortable and the kayak easy to maneuver. One thing that we did notice is that there are no pockets or cubby holes to store extra things or carry along a few extra cold beverages.

Performance wise, it tracks poorly like every other inflatable, but it makes up for it, since it will turn on a dime. If you are looking for tracking DO NOT BUY ANY inflatable. They are meant to be maneuverable, not to go in a straight line.

Pros:
1100 Tough Denier Material.
Comes with everything you need to get in the water in 15 minutes.
1 or 2 person configuration.
Super stable
Comfortable
Great Price
Looks cool and comes with a repair kit for punctures

Cons:
Paddles are not the best, but we had no problems.
Does not come with a pressure gauge and I could see somebody trying to over-inflate.

Overall we rate the Explorer 2 Inflatable by Intex a 3.5 on a scale of 5 and we would recommend this to any kayaker on a budget. I was really surprised, especially after taking it into the ocean when it’s really meant for lakes, streams or a Lagoon.
